What 𒊓 means
The surrounding text decides: it can spell a syllable or stand for a word. In sign lists for Sumerian, an ancient language, its syllabic value is sa; word-sign readings include “bundle,” “sinew,” “net,” “roast,” and “advice.” A word sign, or logogram, stands for a word instead of spelling its syllables. In scholarly transliteration (a way to write ancient readings with Latin letters), lowercase sa marks the syllabic value, while uppercase SA marks a Sumerian word sign. Those are editorial marks, not different shapes cut into the tablet.
The earliest complete cuneiform system is attested at Uruk IV, circa 3500–3200 BCE, when growing urban administration used it to record goods and quantities. The script later served literature and several languages. Its Sumerian sign inventory was adapted for Akkadian, including Babylonian and Assyrian varieties; in the Standard Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh, SA can represent the Akkadian word šerʾānu, “muscle” or “sinew.” That is a reading in that passage, not a fixed English translation.
Why does 𒊓 look different in different fonts?
A font may show one period or scribal style for the same sign. Old Babylonian lapidary (carved) and cursive (quickly written) forms, and Neo-Assyrian forms, can differ. That is a historical style difference, not a different Unicode character. Scribes did not consistently change a sign's shape to distinguish its sound value from its word value, so appearance alone cannot settle the reading.
How do I type 𒊓 accurately?
Use a Unicode input method or a cuneiform transliteration tool. The Latin letters sa are a scholarly reading, not a universal keyboard command; transliteration tools may need marked input to distinguish signs. The font you use determines which historical style appears.
Scholarly and historical; the surrounding text supplies its reading.
Do not translate the isolated sign as “sinew”; its reading depends on the passage.
