cypriot syllable te

Cypriot Syllable Te

44/55

𐠮 writes the syllable “te” in a Cypriot spelling; it contributes one sound unit, not a whole word. The Cypriot syllabary wrote mainly Greek on Cyprus and is linked, through a debated line of development, to earlier Cypro-Minoan writing. Cypriot inscriptions usually run right to left, which can change how this sign sits beside left-to-right text.

What 𐠮 means

It writes “te” as one unit within a larger spelling. A syllabogram is a sign for one spoken syllable. The Cypriot syllabary mainly writes open syllables, usually a consonant with a vowel or a vowel alone. When a Greek word has a consonant cluster or ends in a consonant, its spelling can use extra vowel signs to represent those sounds; you need the surrounding signs to read the whole word.

Cypriot text usually runs right to left. In digital text, the character’s strong right-to-left direction can affect adjacent Latin or Greek text, so mixed text may appear reordered even when the encoded characters are correct.

Why was 𐠮 written?

The Cypriot syllabary was used mainly for Arcado-Cypriot, a local Greek dialect. In surviving records, its signs are carved into stone, clay, and metal; painted on pottery; and stamped on coins. Many texts are dedications or funerary inscriptions. Around Amathus, some inscriptions use Eteocypriot, a local language whose inscriptions remain undeciphered as of 2026.

An earlier Cypriot writing system called Cypro-Minoan is attested in the late Bronze Age. The earliest readable Cypriot syllabic inscription dates to the 11th century BCE and records a Greek name. A common lineage model links this later syllabary through Cypro-Minoan to Linear A, another Aegean syllabary, but scholars debate the exact transition; Linear B is a related script used for comparison. In the fourth century BCE, Cypriot kings preserved the syllabary alongside the Greek alphabet, and inscriptions in both scripts show their overlap. During the Hellenistic period, the Greek alphabet eventually replaced the syllabary in official documents.

A technical sign for reading ancient Cypriot spellings; its value belongs inside a word.
