What does Cyrillic subscript ha mark?
In some transcriptions, it marks an archiphoneme.
An archiphoneme is a category for sounds whose contrast disappears in a particular position. In one Bulgarian dialect transcription, с𞁡 labels a group including s-, z-, sh-, zh- and Cyrillic х (the rough consonant in the Scottish pronunciation of loch); the exact sound depends on context.
The subscript convention predates digital text. Aleksandar Belić’s 1905 study of Serbian dialects used raised and lowered letters for stronger and weaker vowel values. A Cyrillic subscript ha appears in linguist L. E. Kalnyn’s 1973 study of Ukrainian dialect sounds. A 2007 comparison of dialects in Bulgaria and a Bulgarian enclave in Moldova also uses subscripts for archiphonemes. Some systems use raised modifiers for pronunciation details and lowered ones for sound categories.

NFKC is Unicode’s compatibility-normalization form. It maps this subscript form to ordinary Cyrillic х, while NFC preserves the separate character. Avoid NFKC when your transcription relies on the lowered position.
