Descending Node

In a chart, ☋ marks the Moon’s descending node: where its orbit crosses the ecliptic from north to south. Astrology also calls it the South Node or Dragon’s Tail; some astrological traditions associate it with Ketu. Ideas like familiar patterns or release are astrological readings, while astronomy uses the mark for orbital geometry.

What ☋ means

It marks where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic going south.

The ecliptic is the Sun’s apparent path across the sky, and the Moon crosses it twice in its orbit. In astrology, ☋ is the South Node. Some chart traditions read it as familiar patterns, prior conditioning, or release; astronomy treats the node as orbital geometry, not a personality reading.

Why is ☋ called the Dragon’s Tail?

The name comes from eclipse stories that pictured a dragon.

In Indian traditions, Rāhu and Ketu are linked to the two parts of a demon associated with eclipses. Iranian traditions described a dragon spanning the lunar nodes, and related dragon head-and-tail terms appear in medieval Islamic sources. The route by which the imagery traveled among these traditions remains uncertain.

Specialist chart notation; the surrounding chart tells you whether the writer means orbital geometry or an astrological reading.

The pair marks the Moon’s descending and ascending nodes, the two ends of its nodal axis.
In an eclipse explanation
It identifies the Moon’s southward orbital crossing, with no astrological meaning required.
