New Moon

Night, darkness, mystery, or the actual new moon.

This black moon emoji is mood lighting, not a facial expression. After a goodnight it says lights out; under a night photo it is scenery; in a spooky caption it sets the scene. In astrology and wellness posts it means a fresh start: the time for setting intentions, while the full moon 🌕 is for letting go.

The sky meaning is literal. At new moon the Moon sits roughly between Earth and the Sun, so the side facing you is unlit and the Moon is up in daytime, lost in the Sun's glare. Nights around new moon have little moonlight, which is why stargazers plan around them.

Some calendars hang on this phase. Chinese months start at the astronomical new moon, so Lunar New Year lands on one, and the main night of Diwali is the no-moon night of the month of Kartik. Islamic months work differently: they traditionally begin with the first crescent seen after new moon, and authorities differ on sighting versus calculation.
