What 🕦 means
The long hand points at 6, the short hand sits between 11 and 12. On a twelve-hour dial, the minute hand reaches 6 at thirty minutes past the hour. The hour hand has left 11 and is nearly at 12, because the hour is almost over. Read together: half past eleven, half an hour before noon or before midnight.
If you grew up on digital clocks the picture may read as a blur of two sticks. The trick is to look at the short hand first: it is between the two top-right numbers, 11 and 12. The neighbouring faces differ only by a small rotation, which is why 🕦 is easily mixed up with (ten-thirty) and (twelve-thirty) at message size.
What does 🕦 mean when someone sends it?
It means a time, nothing more: 11:30, and the message says which one. In a plan it stands in for the figures: “train leaves 🕦”, “call at 🕦?”. In a story it sets the scene: “🕦 and still at the office” or “🕦 and I can't sleep”. Sent alone in reply to “when?”, it is simply the answer.
The one real pitfall is morning versus night. English speakers often write 11:30 am or pm; many countries write 11:30 or 23:30 instead, and the emoji is blind to both. When you use it to arrange something, add “tonight” or “before lunch”, or write the figures next to it. Across time zones, name the zone too.
The clock emoji have a second life as decoration. A row like shows time passing; 🕦 near the end of such a row reads as “almost midnight” or “nearly out of time”, a last-minute feeling rather than a specific appointment.
Neutral and practical; it carries no mood of its own and fits work chat, family plans and casual texts alike.
The clock cannot show morning or night, so an unlabelled 🕦 can send someone to a 23:30 meeting that was at 11:30.

7Worth knowing
- Unicode has exactly 24 clock faces: one for each hour and each half-hour. The on-the-hour faces came from Japanese mobile emoji; the half-hour ones, including 🕦, were added at the same time to complete the set.
- Half past eleven is the last half-hour face before the hands meet at the top, which is why writers use it for “five minutes to midnight” moments and last-minute deadlines.
Questions people ask
3Is there an 11:45 or 11:15 clock emoji?
No. The clock faces come only on the hour and at half past. For a quarter hour, write the figures and use 🕦 or as the nearest picture.
Is there a separate emoji for 11:30 pm?
No. One face covers both 11:30 and 23:30, like any twelve-hour clock. Add am, pm or the 24-hour figures when it matters.
Does 🕦 look the same on every phone?
The time does: hands at half past eleven. The dial's colour and style vary by phone and app, so don't describe the picture, describe the time.
