ten-thirty

Ten-Thirty

29/31

🕥 is a clock face showing half past ten, 10:30. People send it to set or confirm a time: a meeting, a train, a call, a deadline, bedtime. Like any twelve-hour clock it can mean 10:30 in the morning or 22:30 at night, so the words around it decide. It is one of 24 clock-face emoji, one for every hour and half hour.

What 🕥 means

The long hand points at 6, the short hand sits between 10 and 11. That is half past ten on any analog clock: the minute hand has travelled halfway round, so the hour hand has moved halfway from 10 to 11. It is a time of day, not a length of time; nobody uses it for "ten and a half hours".

The clock in the picture has no AM or PM marker, so 🕥 stands equally for 10:30 and 22:30. On a phone screen the face is tiny, and 🕥 is easy to mistake for (ten o'clock) or the neighbouring half hours and . When the exact time matters, people usually write the digits as well and let the emoji decorate them.

What does it mean when someone sends 🕥?

Usually: "at half past ten", or "look at the time". "Meet at 🕥?" is a proposal, "🕥 sharp" a warning, and a lone 🕥 in reply to "when?" is the answer. In announcements and event posts a clock emoji simply marks the line that gives the time, the way marks the place.

The hands are not always meant literally. Many people pick whichever clock face their keyboard offers first to mean "time" in general: a countdown, a reminder, "running late", "still up". If the hands disagree with the time written next to them, trust the digits. If there is no time at all, the emoji is probably about time passing rather than 10:30.

Neutral and practical; it fits work chats, family logistics and party invitations alike.

Don't assume the sender chose the hands deliberately; a mismatch with the written time is a slip, not a change of plan.

Worth knowing

  • The on-the-hour clock faces came from Japanese mobile-carrier emoji; the half-hour faces, 🕥 among them, were added in Unicode 6.0 to fill out a full set of 24.
  • There is no quarter-past or quarter-to clock emoji. 10:15 and 10:45 have to be written in digits.

Questions people ask

3

Does 🕥 mean 10:30 in the morning or at night?

Either. The face has no AM or PM, so it stands for both 10:30 and 22:30. Look at the plan or the words around it; add "am", "pm" or yourself if it could be misread.

Is there an emoji for 10:15 or 10:45?

No. The clock-face set covers only full hours and half hours, so 🕥 is the closest you get to anything between 10:00 and 11:00.

Does 🕥 mean ten and a half hours?

No. It is a time of day, like a clock on the wall. For a length of time people use , or just write the number of hours.
