Dives Akuru Letter Dda

19/72

𑤘 is a consonant letter in Dives Akuru, a historical script used to write Dhivehi, the language of the Maldives. Alone, it has no complete word or message; in a conversation, read it first as a reference to the script or a font test. Dives Akuru is historically linked to medieval Sinhala and influenced early Thaana.

What 𑤘 means

It is a consonant letter, not a complete word. Dives Akuru is an abugida: consonants carry an inherent vowel unless a dependent vowel sign changes it or virāma cancels it or helps join consonants. So 𑤘 belongs within a written Dhivehi syllable; it does not work as an independent word or emblem.

If it arrives by itself, read it as a reference to the historical script or as a font test. Without that context, the letter cannot identify a complete Dhivehi word.

How did Dives Akuru develop?

Its record follows centuries of Maldivian religious and official writing. The earliest Maldivian inscription described in the Unicode proposal is a Landū coral block from the 6th–8th centuries, written in a form of Grantha. Recognizable Dives Akuru appears on two Buddhist statues from the 9th–10th centuries.

By the 12th century, Dives Akuru appears consistently in lōmāfānu, copperplate grants issued by Maldivian rulers for building and maintaining mosques. Its written style began changing in the 14th century. Later records on paper and wood include chronicles, epitaphs, mosque engravings and pottery; Dhivehi texts also contain Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian terms, reflecting the script's use in religious and administrative life.

Thaana appeared alongside Dives Akuru in the 18th century; by the turn of the 19th century, it had replaced it as regular writing for Dhivehi. In the older Brahmi-derived South Asian writing tradition, Dives Akuru is closest to medieval Sinhala. Early Thaana letters appear to draw on Dives Akuru and Arabic digits. Unicode treats evēla akuru and later Dives Akuru as phases of one script.

Why does 𑤘 look broken or refuse to type?

A missing glyph or input method affects display, not identity.

In 2022, a Microsoft Word report described Dives Akuru letters failing to join into expected forms and falling back to Tahoma or Calibri, which lacked support for the script.

Unicode encodes the character but does not prescribe keyboard keys for entering it. Use an input method that explicitly supports Dives Akuru and its vowel signs.

Historical and typographic; a lone 𑤘 signals script interest more readily than ordinary chat tone.

A lone consonant letter is not a complete Dhivehi word.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𑤘 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
