Dives Akuru letter Ssa

38/72

𑤫 is a consonant letter used in Dives Akuru, the historical script for Dhivehi, the language of the Maldives. It belongs in a word: vowel marks or a virama (also called halanta) affect its syllable and consonant clusters. One letter can take different historical forms in different fonts.

What 𑤫 means

It is a consonant letter, not a word on its own.

Ssa is a transliteration label, not an English translation. Dives Akuru writes Dhivehi; like other abugidas, each consonant normally carries a built-in “a” sound, which vowel marks can change. A virama, also called halanta, can cancel that vowel or help join consonants into a cluster.

Dives Akuru developed over time. The earliest surviving Maldivian stone inscriptions date to the 9th or 10th century and show an earlier stage between Grantha and early Dives Akuru; a distinct Dives Akuru form emerged in the late 12th century.

Why did people use Dives Akuru?

It served writing and public records in the Maldives.

Its surviving uses include copper plates recording land grants, royal records on wood or paper, chronicles, stone epitaphs, and inscriptions on mosque beams.

After the Maldives adopted Islam, records mixed Dives Akuru with Arabic and added ways to write Arabic words. Thaana appeared alongside it in the 18th century and took over regular Dhivehi writing by the turn of the 19th century. Historical accounts place Dives Akuru near medieval Sinhala; another analysis compares it with Tulu. Both link it to southern Brahmi, the South Asian script tradition from which several regional scripts developed. Thaana's numerals later combined Arabic and Dives Akuru forms.

A historical-script character; alone, it reads like a specimen, not a casual message.

A lone 𑤫 is not a reaction or a complete Dhivehi word.

Can 𑤫 have different historical-looking forms?

Yes. Fonts can draw the same encoded letter in different historical or manuscript styles; missing script coverage can instead cause fallback or a blank box.
