What 𑠐 means
It is one Dogra consonant letter, read within a spelling. Dogra consonants carry an inherent “a” vowel. A vowel sign changes that vowel; a virama, a mark that suppresses it, lets consonants form a cluster. So 𑠐 contributes one consonant to a written syllable, not a complete word.
Dogra belongs to the Takri family of scripts; that tradition developed from Sharada, an older script, through an intermediate form called Devāśeṣa.
Why was Dogra written?
Dogra moved from practical regional writing into official and printed use. People used it for informal communication and business. Standardization brought its forms closer to Devanagari and Gurmukhi, and the script was then used for administration and literary work.
Dogra appears on currency, judicial and non-judicial stamps, postcards, and postage stamps. In 1872 the first book printed in standard Dogra appeared: a Dogri translation of Līlavatī, a mathematical work by Bhāskarācārya.
After Maharaja Ranbir Singh died, Urdu became the official language and Dogra use declined.
How is Old Dogra different from New Dogra?
They are historical forms of one script, not different meanings of cha.
Old and New Dogra differ mainly in letter shapes and in how they write consonant clusters. A Unicode proposal records regular and variant CHA shapes in surviving material, so a scan may not match the representative New Dogra form. The standardized New Dogra form dates to the 1860s; examples cited as Old Dogra include material from 1882 and 1916.
Best suited to reading Dogra passages, historical records, and script or heritage material.
On its own, 𑠐 reads as one consonant, not a complete word.
Drift: As of 2026, Dogri is generally written in Devanagari; Dogra is mainly encountered in archival records, script history, and heritage work.

1Why does 𑠐 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Dogra block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
