Downward Facing Hook

9/14

In a Church Slavonic Typicon, 🤈 marks a Forefeast or Afterfeast service that includes an eight-tone cycle of hymns. A Forefeast comes before a major feast; an Afterfeast follows it. This is a service instruction from Nikita Syrnikov’s system, not an emotional cue on its own. Its font-drawn shape may show as a box if the font lacks it.

What 🤈 means

It marks a feast’s before-or-after period when the Octoechos is chanted. A Forefeast covers the days before a major feast, and an Afterfeast follows it. A Typicon is a book of service instructions; this sign is a rubric, a short direction for worship.

In Nikita Syrnikov’s 1910 guide for Yedinoverie parishes, 🤈 paired the feast-period notice with the Octoechos chant. The Octoechos is the service’s cycle of hymns arranged in eight tones. Yedinoverie was a Russian Orthodox tradition that retained older liturgical practice. A dot adds a Kontakion direction: after Ode 3, chant the feast hymn; after Ode 6, the saint’s hymn.

The wider Typicon-mark system is attributed to Nicon of the Black Mountain in the 11th century. Syrnikov’s forms derive from marks attributed to St. Gennadius of Novgorod around 1500. A Ukrainian Greek Catholic Typicon published in 1899 used a separate system, so these readings describe Syrnikov’s convention. The character’s 2017 encoding date is far later than those liturgical traditions.

What does it mean when someone sends 🤈?

A standalone message does not settle what its sender intends.

In a Church Slavonic service listing, read it through the surrounding notation. Outside that setting, the glyph alone gives no reliable emotional reading; ask whether the conversation concerns a service book, the character, or a font.

Specialist and liturgical in Syrnikov’s system; outside that setting, its meaning is obscure.

Do not treat it as an emotional reaction; its documented reading is a service direction.
