What 𛱤 means
It marks a nasal vowel, pronounced with air through the nose. Pernin uses it for “on”; Perrault uses it for “vocalic n” in its accented an, en, in, un series; Romanian shorthand uses it for “în” and as a numeral multiplier.
Duployé’s French shorthand, published in 1860, simplified a method he learned through Aimé Paris, who reworked Conen de Prépéan’s adaptation of Taylor-Bertin. He promoted faster writing and literacy teaching. In British Columbia, a Chinook-writing branch turned the system into a working script for Chinook Jargon and other Indigenous languages in the Kamloops Wawa newsletter, which ran 1891–1923.
Why does its shape change when letters join?
Joined strokes reposition nasal vowels. This one can sit as a small mark between two letters or turn toward one neighboring stroke, so connected text may differ from the isolated character.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𛱤 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Duployan block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
