ethiopic syllable daa

Ethiopic Syllable Daa

ዳ is the Ethiopic da syllable, used inside Amharic and other Ethiopic-script words, not as a complete word by itself. It joins the consonant d to the vowel a, so the surrounding language and word supply its translation. An Ethiopic keyboard selects it from the d-series’ a-vowel form.

What ዳ means

It is one “da” syllable: d joined to the a vowel. In Amharic and other languages written in the Ethiopic script, these consonant-vowel signs form words; ዳ alone is a fragment, not enough to translate.

The Ethiopic script, also called fidel, is historically connected to South Arabian consonant writing, though the exact route is debated. Early writing in Ethiopia and Eritrea includes pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions—texts in a style modeled on South Arabia’s Sabaean script—from the 8th/7th centuries BCE. A clearly recognizable Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions by the 2nd/3rd centuries CE.

The script was first used to write Ge'ez, an older language. Around the 4th century CE, its consonant signs developed vowel-marked forms, turning it into an abugida: a writing system whose signs represent consonant-vowel syllables. As of 2026, Ge'ez is mainly used in liturgy, while the same script also writes Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, and other languages.

How do I type ዳ?

Choose the d-series’ a-vowel form in an Ethiopic keyboard.

A phonetic Amharic layout may label its key da; the exact keystroke depends on the layout. Ethiopic input does not need a physical key for every syllable: layouts map keystrokes or temporary codes to stored characters. If a language-specific keyboard lacks letters you need, use a Unicode keyboard with broader Ethiopic coverage.

Why does ዳ show as a box?

That usually means your font lacks Ethiopic coverage.

Fonts can draw the same character with different outlines, and not every font covers Ethiopic Basic. A square usually means the font lacks that coverage; selecting a font that includes Ethiopic Basic can display it. Replacing ዳ with Latin d changes the text.

Neutral inside Ethiopic writing; sent alone in chat, it reads like a word fragment or a sample of the script.

Do not translate a lone ዳ as a word or reaction.

Sent by itself
A syllable or script sample, not a complete word to translate.
Inside an Amharic word
Read as da within that word; the whole word supplies its meaning.
In Ge'ez liturgical text
Part of the older language; the surrounding text supplies the translation.
In a Tigrinya or Tigre word
The word's language guides its reading and translation; do not assume it is Amharic.
