Chaha is a Gurage variety. In 1962, linguist Wolf Leslau asked Sahle Selassie Berhane Mariam to write stories documenting it. Their Ethiopic spelling added 44 signs for Gurage sounds and appeared in Ethiopians Speak, Volume 2: Chaha in 1966.
The Gurage Zone endorsed a clearer spelling system in 2013; modern 𞟽 and older ᎍ write the same syllable.
