ethiopic syllable gye

Ethiopic Syllable Gye

78/79

ⷝ is an older Gurage syllable sign: its g sound is made with the tongue raised toward the hard palate, followed by the e vowel in “bed.” Reformed Gurage spelling pairs it with ጝ. A box in place of the character can mean the font lacks support.

What ⷝ means

It marks an older Gurage syllable with palatalized g plus e.

Palatalized means the speaker raises the middle of the tongue toward the hard palate while making the g sound; the syllable then has the vowel in English “bed.” Gurage is a language spoken in Ethiopia.

The Ethiopic script, also called the Ge’ez script, grew from a South Arabian writing tradition and was later extended beyond Ge’ez for languages such as Gurage. The Gurage extension series is believed to have been introduced in 1963–1964; linguist Wolf Leslau’s 1965 publication is cited as its first significant external example.

What does ⷝ signal in a modern text?

It is an older Gurage spelling mapped to ጝ.

The 2013 Gurage spelling reform reassigned the older palatalized-g series ⷘ–ⷞ to the ጘ series. A 2021 proposal pairs ⷝ with ጝ in the reformed system.

An older form can appear in historical Gurage works or data preserving legacy spelling. In a present-day message, it may mean the sender is quoting or preserving that spelling; change it to ጝ only when deliberately converting to the reformed orthography.

A specialist spelling character for Gurage writing, historical works, or legacy data.

Do not silently replace it in a historical quotation.
