What ዃ means
Use an Ethiopic keyboard or transliteration input method. Ethiopic input usually selects a consonant-and-vowel position in a syllable chart and turns it into ዃ. Unicode does not specify the physical keys, so the keystrokes depend on your keyboard or input method.
Fonts can draw the same encoded syllable with different outlines. A changed shape alone does not mean the text contains a different character.
What does ዃ mean in a word?
It marks one syllable inside a word. ዃ is an Ethiopic syllable sign used in Amharic and Tigrinya. The Ethiopic script, often called fidel, first served Ge’ez, an ancient Ethiopian language. Inscriptions show a clearly defined script by the second or third century CE; its vowel-based syllable system had developed by the fourth century CE.
Ethiopic letter forms resemble South Arabian predecessors but developed as a distinct script tradition. A 2008 Tigrinya romanization table writes ዃ as “khwa.” That Latin spelling is a transliteration, not a pronunciation rule for every language using Ethiopic.

Questions people ask
1Why does ዃ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
