What ኜ means
Roughly the Spanish ñ sound followed by the e in “met.”
Ethiopic writing appears in inscriptions from the second/third centuries CE; by the fourth century, its forms marked vowels as well as consonants. The script developed from older South Arabian consonant writing, used in the southern Arabian Peninsula. It was used for Geʽez, an older language preserved in Ethiopian Orthodox worship and manuscripts, then adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya and Tigre.

1Why does ኜ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Ethiopic block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
