What ኙ means
It contributes one syllable; the full word carries the meaning. The Ethiopic script, also called fidel, uses signs for syllables. ኙ is transliterated “nyu”; by itself, it is a fragment rather than a standard chat reaction.
Inscriptions at Yeha and Matara show Proto-Ge’ez, an early form of Ethiopic writing, around the fourth or fifth century BCE. The script is linked to Old South Arabian, an ancient consonant-only script; the direction of influence remains debated.
Around 350 CE, Ge’ez writing became a syllabary: signs marked vowels as well as consonants, in a form used for Orthodox sacred writing. The script later served Amharic, Tigre, Oromo, and other languages.
Fonts can give ኙ different strokes without changing the syllable it represents.

Questions people ask
1Why does ኙ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Ethiopic block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

ኙ\1299Why is ኙ a box on my screen?
fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
