ethiopic syllable pe

Ethiopic Syllable Pe

321/358

In an Ethiopic word, ፕ writes a p sound in the series’ sixth form; the language decides whether that form has a weak vowel or no vowel. It appears in words written in Ge’ez, Amharic, Tigrinya, and other languages using Ethiopic script. Fonts can draw the same character with different outlines.

What ፕ means

It is the sixth sign in the Ethiopic p family.

It writes p with a very short, weak vowel, or bare p, depending on the language. The sound belongs inside a word; the sign is not a word or picture by itself.

So “Pe” is a catalogue label, not a full pronunciation guide. Read it through the surrounding word and language.

Where did the Ge'ez p series come from?

The writing system grew from consonant signs into syllable signs.

The earliest writing attested in Ethiopia and Eritrea is pseudo-Sabaean—early South Arabian-style consonant writing—from the 8th/7th centuries BCE. A modified South Arabian consonant script was used for Ge’ez, the classical Ethiopian language, by the 1st–3rd centuries CE. By the 4th century CE it had become an abugida: each basic sign pairs a consonant with a vowel, while changed forms show other vowels or no vowel.

The script first served to write Ge’ez; it is now also used for Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, Oromo, and other languages. Between 300 BCE–600 CE, Greek influence is thought to have contributed to further changes, including Greek letter forms as number signs, left-to-right writing, and the likely addition of ፐ and ጰ. Those dates trace the writing system’s development, not the exact printed shape of ፕ.

Why does ፕ change shape across fonts?

It is one character whose glyph can vary by font.

Unicode notes that an Ethiopic syllable can have different glyph forms, much as Latin a or g can vary; those forms do not all coexist in one font. Two screens can therefore show different outlines for the same stored character. Check the font before treating a shape change as a spelling change.

Script-specific and technical: ፕ points to Ethiopic writing; on its own, it is a letter fragment.

A lone ፕ does not settle its sound or message; the sender’s language and word context do.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ፕ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
