What ቁ means
On Keyman’s Modern Geʾez keyboard, type qu. The phonetic layout maps those Latin keystrokes to ቁ.
Fidel is the Ethiopic syllabary: its signs are arranged in consonant series with different vowel forms. ቁ is the u-vowel form in the series conventionally transliterated with Latin q; ቀ and ቅ are other forms with different readings.
What does ቁ mean in Ethiopic text?
It writes a syllable; the surrounding word supplies its reading.
The Latin spelling qu is a conventional transliteration, not a pronunciation guide that applies across languages. The script appears in Geʾez and in modern Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre writing; the spoken sound of ቁ depends on the language and word.
How did the Ethiopic script develop?
It grew from an older inscriptional tradition into a syllabic script. South Arabian writing reached Tigray around the eighth century BCE. A clearly defined Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the second/third centuries CE, and its vowel-marked syllable system had developed by the fourth century.
Ethiopic writing served public inscriptions, while Geʾez became a literary and religious manuscript language. The script’s forms have South Arabian precursors and were adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre.
