Ethiopic Syllable Rwa

48/358

ሯ represents the Ethiopic syllable rwa: an r followed by a brief w-like glide and a, all in one syllable. It belongs inside a word, such as Amharic ሯጭ (“runner”), rather than serving as a complete message by itself. Its form belongs to the expanded syllabary used for Amharic.

Text symbol

What ሯ means

It represents one syllable, rwa.

In the transliteration, say the r, glide briefly toward w, and finish with a, all in one beat. Amharic ሯ begins ሯጭ (“runner”); here it is one character within the word.

How did ሯ enter Ethiopic writing?

It belongs to Ethiopic writing expanded for Amharic.

The earliest writing recorded in the region used South Arabian consonant letters in inscriptions from the eighth/seventh centuries BCE. Recognizable Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the second/third centuries CE. It was first used to write Geʽez, an older language still used in Ethiopian church liturgy. By the fourth century CE, its letter forms had been adapted to mark vowels, allowing a syllabograph to combine a consonant and a vowel.

Amharic took over the script from Geʽez in the 13th or 14th century, though Amharic writing remained sporadic until the early 20th century. As the script adapted, it gained labialized syllables—forms with a brief w-like glide—first for back-of-mouth consonants such as k and g, then for others such as r. ሯ is the rwa form. The script is also used, with modifications, for Tigrinya and Tigre.

How do I type ሯ?

On GFF Amharic 3.3, type rua.

On this QWERTY-based Amharic layout, r, then u, then a produce ሯ. Other input methods may map it differently because Unicode does not prescribe keyboard keystrokes.

Fonts can draw different outlines for the same conceptual syllable. A changed shape does not by itself mean the text contains a different character.

ሯ is a writing syllable whose reading belongs inside an Ethiopic word.

A lone ሯ is not a complete message; read it as part of its word.

Why does ሯ look different in another font?

Yes. Ethiopic syllables can have different font outlines while representing the same conceptual syllable; a changed shape alone does not mean the text character changed.
