What ሳ means
It writes “sa” as one consonant–vowel syllable. In Ethiopic fidel, a syllabic writing system, each form joins a consonant with a vowel. ሳ pairs the s sound with the a vowel; inside a word, it contributes that syllable’s sound while the full word carries the meaning.
In Amharic, older distinctions between related s-series spellings can merge in pronunciation, even when the spellings stay distinct. That means ሳ and ሣ may sound alike to an Amharic reader.
How did Ethiopic writing develop?
The script evolved over centuries from South Arabian writing.
South Arabian writing reached the region in the 8th/7th centuries BCE. A clearly defined Ethiopic script appears in the 2nd/3rd centuries CE and first served to write Ge’ez, an ancient language of the region. In the 4th century CE, vowel marks transformed the older consonant script into an abugida: a system where basic signs combine a consonant and a vowel. The script was later adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre.
How do I type ሳ?
Use an Ethiopic input method. On Keyman’s Amharic mnemonic layout, as of 2026-09-06, type s followed by a to enter ሳ. The layout selects a complete consonant–vowel form; typing the Latin letters alone produces different text.
If ሳ shows as a box, your font lacks an Ethiopic glyph. Different fonts can draw it differently without changing the underlying character.
