What ሶ means
It is the Ethiopic “so” syllable, with the o vowel. The ሰ series is the s-family: ሰ is its first vowel form, while ሶ has the o vowel. Ethiopic writing uses related forms to show a consonant with different vowels. Alone, ሶ gives a syllable, not a whole word’s meaning.
The script’s origins are debated. Early writing is associated with pre-Aksumite graffiti and inscriptions related to South Arabian writing; an inscription at Dakhanamo is reported as an early attestation of the Ethiopian alphabet. Ezana’s inscriptions show the fully vocalized script by the mid-4th century CE.
The script developed for writing Geʽez. Its vowel-bearing forms are linked to translating Christian Scripture and producing sacred literature more efficiently. In the 14th–15th centuries CE, Amharic added base letters for newer sounds. Ethiopic writing also serves Tigrinya and other languages, so ሶ appears in different words while keeping its syllabic role.
How do I type ሶ?
Press s, then o on the GFF Amharic keyboard. Its mnemonic layout maps s to the ሰ family and o to that family’s o-vowel form, ሶ; other Ethiopic layouts may assign different keys.
On Windows, as of 2026, the built-in Amharic IME accepts phoneme keys; Windows + Space switches layouts, and Enter commits the result. If ሶ displays as a square, the font may lack Ethiopic coverage; a font that supports the script can display it.
The same Ethiopic-script syllable appears in Amharic, Geʽez, Tigrinya and other languages; the surrounding language and spelling supply the word-level reading.
Alone, it gives a syllable but not enough context to identify a whole word.
