South Arabian settlers and stonemasons from around Sana’a and Ma’rib brought the Sabaean language and South Arabian alphabet into Tigray, a region in northern Ethiopia, around the 8th century BCE; the script then evolved locally. As of 2026, the Aksum museum identifies the inscription at Dakhanamo as the earliest Ethiopian alphabet attestation it reports. Geʿez, an ancient Ethiopian language, was later written in the developing script. Around the 4th century CE, vowel notation transformed the older consonant alphabet into an abugida: each consonant has forms paired with following vowels. This is the writing system’s ancestry, not a date for ⶠ itself.
