What ፅ means
It writes a consonant-vowel syllable. The Ethiopic fidel is a syllabic script; “tze” names the series in transliteration.
Consonant-only pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions are attested in Ethiopia and Eritrea in the 8th/7th centuries BC. By the 1st–3rd centuries CE, an abjad (consonant-only script) wrote Geʽez; in the 4th century it became an abugida, whose consonant signs change with vowels. It later served religious worship, royal writing, and Amharic schooling. These dates trace the script, not ፅ.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ፅ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
