What ቯ means
It is the v row’s w-glide syllable.
In a fidel chart, each consonant family has vowel forms. ቯ is the v-family’s form ending in a, with a brief w-like glide. It marks one syllable, not a whole word.
South Arabian-linked “pseudo-Sabaean” consonant inscriptions are its earliest ancestors (8th–7th centuries BCE). Ethiopic writing was consonantal in the 1st–3rd centuries CE; as an abugida (consonant forms also mark vowels), it served Geʽez by the 4th century CE. Amharic adopted it in the 13th or 14th century; other languages followed. The v series was probably added for Portuguese in the 17th century.

Questions people ask
1Why does ቯ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
