What ዮ means
Its meaning comes from the word around it.
South-Arabian inscriptions in Ethiopia and Eritrea reach the eighth/seventh centuries BCE. A recognizable Ethiopic script, adapted from South Arabian consonant writing for Ge’ez, appears in inscriptions in the second/third centuries CE. In the fourth century CE, vowel forms reshaped it into a syllable-writing system: each sign combines a consonant and vowel.
The fidel script writes Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre; Ge’ez remains a liturgical language. “Yo” labels the y-series form, not a universal pronunciation.

Questions people ask
1Why does ዮ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
