Flag: Benin

26/259

🇧🇯 is the flag of Benin, a country in West Africa between Togo and Nigeria. People send it to say "this is about Benin": a trip, a football match, roots, or pride in being Beninese. If you see the letters BJ instead of a flag, your device simply has no picture for it.

What 🇧🇯 means

The flag of the Republic of Benin, a French-speaking country in West Africa. Benin is a narrow country on the Gulf of Guinea, with Togo to the west and Nigeria to the east. Its official capital is Porto-Novo, but the biggest city and economic centre is Cotonou. French is the official language, alongside Fon, Yoruba and dozens of others. Until 1975 the country was called Dahomey, after the powerful kingdom that ruled the area from Abomey for centuries, famous for its all-female regiments of soldiers.

The flag is easy to tell apart once you know its layout: a vertical green band next to the pole, and on the rest of the flag a yellow band above a red one. Green, yellow and red are the pan-African colours, shared with many neighbours, but Benin is one of the few countries that mixes a vertical stripe with horizontal ones. The usual explanation of the colours is green for hope and renewal, red for the courage of the ancestors, and yellow for the country's wealth.

What does it mean when someone sends 🇧🇯?

They are pointing at Benin: a place, a team, a person or a heritage. In a bio it says "I am Beninese" or "my family is from Benin", often next to another flag for where the person lives now. In a chat it labels a trip ("landed in Cotonou 🇧🇯"), a football match (Benin's national team, nicknamed the Squirrels), or news from the country. Around 1 August, Benin's Independence Day, it fills posts of pride and congratulations, and in January it turns up around the Vodun festival, the national celebration of the Vodun (Voodoo) religion that began in this part of Africa.

The flag has no hidden or ironic meaning. It is a plain country marker, warm when it stands beside a celebration and neutral everywhere else.

Why does it show up as BJ instead of a flag?

Because the flag is really two letter symbols, B and J, that fuse into one picture. Every country flag emoji is built from two "regional indicator" letters matching the country's two-letter code; Benin's code is BJ. Phones, Macs and most websites draw the flag; Windows, as of 2025, still shows the bare letters in most apps. Nothing is broken on the sender's side. One awkward wrinkle: in English slang the letters BJ have a crude meaning, so a Benin flag that fails to render can raise an eyebrow in a mixed chat. The text came across fine; only the picture is missing.

Neutral and informative on its own; festive next to a match, a holiday or homecoming news. Safe in any conversation.

If the receiver's screen shows the letters BJ, the flag did not render; the slang reading of those letters is accidental.

Worth knowing

  • Benin's flag was adopted in 1959 for Dahomey, dropped in 1975 when the Marxist government replaced it with a green flag bearing a red star, and brought back in 1990 with democracy.
  • The Vodun (Voodoo) religion grew up on this coast, and Benin marks it with a public holiday every 10 January.

Questions people ask

3

Is Benin the same as Benin City or the Kingdom of Benin?

No. Benin City and the historic Kingdom of Benin, famous for its bronzes, are in southern Nigeria. The country Benin took its name in 1975 from the Bight of Benin, the bay on its coast.

What do the colours of the Benin flag stand for?

The usual explanation: green for hope and renewal, red for the courage of the ancestors, and yellow for the nation's wealth. Together they are the pan-African colours.

Does 🇧🇯 mean anything other than Benin?

No. Any other reading comes from the letters BJ appearing when a screen cannot draw the flag.
