Flag: Liechtenstein

136/259

🇱🇮 is the flag of Liechtenstein, a tiny German-speaking principality squeezed between Switzerland and Austria in the Alps. People send it for trips to Vaduz, their nationality, and the national football and ski teams. The small gold crown in the corner is the whole difference from Haiti's flag: the two were discovered to be identical at the 1936 Olympics.

What 🇱🇮 means

Liechtenstein, a principality of about 160 square kilometres between Switzerland and Austria.

It is one of the smallest countries in the world: around 40,000 people living in a strip of the Rhine valley and the mountains above it. The capital is Vaduz, overlooked by the castle where the Prince of Liechtenstein lives; the country is still a monarchy, and the prince has real political power. People speak German, pay in Swiss francs, and cross into Switzerland without any border control, so visitors often arrive on a day trip from Zürich or Innsbruck.

The flag is two horizontal bands, blue above red, with a gold crown in the top corner nearest the pole. The colours are usually explained as the blue sky over the red glow of evening fires in the valley, and the crown stands for the prince and the bond between the ruling family and the people.

That crown was an emergency fix. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics the Liechtenstein team noticed that Haiti was marching under exactly the same blue-and-red flag. The crown was added by law in 1937 so the two could never be confused again, and in emoji form the difference is even clearer, because Haiti's flag now carries a white panel with its coat of arms in the middle.

What does it mean when someone sends 🇱🇮?

Almost always a plain place tag: the country, its people or its teams.

You will meet it next to travel plans (Vaduz Castle, hiking in the Alps, a stop between Switzerland and Austria), in a bio marking where someone is from, or in a sports post. In football it usually signals the lovable underdog, since the national team is one of the smallest in Europe; in winter it points to alpine skiing, the sport the country is best at. On 15 August, the national holiday, locals post it alongside pictures of the fireworks and the public reception at the castle garden.

It carries no joke, slang or hidden meaning. If you received it and the person is not from there, the likeliest reasons are a trip, a ski race or a football match.

Neutral and factual: a country label like any other flag, with no slang meaning.

Do not send it for Haiti; Haiti's flag has a white centre panel.

Worth knowing

  • Liechtenstein is one of only two countries in the world that are doubly landlocked: to reach the sea you have to cross at least two other countries. The other is Uzbekistan.
  • Every Olympic medal Liechtenstein has ever won came from alpine skiing, which still gives it one of the highest medal counts per inhabitant of any nation.

Questions people ask

4

Can I use 🇱🇮 for Haiti?

No. Haiti has its own emoji, , with a white panel and coat of arms in the middle. 🇱🇮 with the corner crown is always Liechtenstein.

Why does the flag show up as the letters LI?

Because the device displaying it has no flag pictures. Flag emoji are really two code letters, L and I, and a system without flag artwork, most often Windows, just shows those letters. Phones show the flag.

What do the blue, red and crown stand for?

The blue is usually explained as the sky and the red as the evening glow of fires in the valley; the gold crown stands for the prince and the unity of ruler and people. The crown was added in 1937.

Is Liechtenstein part of Switzerland?

No. It is an independent country with its own prince and government, but it uses the Swiss franc, shares an open border and lets Switzerland handle its customs, which is why the two are often mentioned together.
