What 🇹🇿 means
Tanzania, or something Tanzanian.
People add it for nationality, travel, a team, an event, or Swahili, the language widely spoken there. Beside a name or place, it tags it as Tanzanian.
Why does the Tanzania emoji say TZ?
TZ is the letters-only fallback. As of 2026, Windows shows national flags as two-letter codes; other systems without flag art show TZ or an empty box.
The flag is two regional-indicator symbols, T plus Z. Emoji keyboards offer the finished flag; ordinary T and Z letters will not make it.
Neutral national tag for travel, identity, sport and Tanzania news.
Don't confuse it with
1Worth knowing
- The characters behind 🇹🇿 existed in Unicode 5 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 6.0 in 2010, emoji presentation in 2015.
- 🇹🇿 is not one character. It is 2 of them glued together, which is why deleting it sometimes takes two presses of backspace and why it breaks character counters.
