What ๐ฐ๐ฒ means
It stands for Comoros, officially the Union of the Comoros. Comoros is a country of volcanic islands at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel, off the coast of East Africa. Its capital is Moroni, almost everyone there is Muslim, and the official languages are Comorian (Shikomori), French and Arabic. The name comes from the Arabic word for moon, qamar: the islands of the moon.
Most people who send the flag are Comorian or have Comorian roots. A large Comorian community lives in France, especially in Marseille, so the flag is common in French-language bios and posts, often next to . It also marks Independence Day on 6 July, greetings home, and support for the national football team. Anyone else sending it is usually talking about a trip or a place.
What is on the flag?
Four stripes and four stars, one for each island. From the top the stripes are yellow, white, red and blue, each for an island: Mohรฉli (Mwali), Mayotte (Maore), Anjouan (Ndzuwani) and Grande Comore (Ngazidja). A green triangle at the hoist holds a white crescent and four white stars. Green and the crescent are symbols of Islam; the stars repeat the count of islands.
The fourth island is the sensitive part. Mayotte voted to stay French when the other islands became independent in 1975 and is governed by France as an overseas department. Comoros counts it as its own fourth island, so the flag itself carries a territorial claim. The current design was adopted with the 2001 constitution; earlier Comorian flags were plain green with a crescent and stars.
Why does ๐ฐ๐ฒ show as the letters KM?
Your device has no picture for this flag. The emoji is really two letter symbols, K and M, the country code for Comoros. Phones and most apps replace the pair with a flag image; as of 2026 Windows does not, so on a PC you see KM in little boxes. The meaning is the same either way, and the recipient on a phone will see the flag.
Neutral and national; it turns personal when someone uses it to say who they are.
Most senders mean home and heritage, not a holiday; don't assume they are travelling.
