What G means
It is G set in a wide character cell.
Fullwidth Latin letters belong to the history of mixed-width computing. In Japan, the 1978 JIS C 6226 character set included wide Latin forms so Latin text and Japanese characters could fit a shared grid. This helped support Japanese word processing.
Unicode kept G as a compatibility form of ordinary G: it has the same letter value but a distinct character identity. In the early 2010s, vaporwave reused fullwidth text for retro styling.
Is fullwidth G vaporwave? Sometimes; in CJK text it serves a width convention, while English-only use can be stylized.
Use ordinary G in names, searches, and identifiers.

1Why does G show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
