What Q means
In Microsoft Japanese IME, press F9 for full-width alphanumeric.
In the Microsoft Japanese IME instructions checked in 2026, F9 converts the current input to full-width alphanumeric and F10 to half-width alphanumeric. Other Japanese input methods may offer a full-width or zenkaku alphanumeric option.
Q and Q are distinct characters in exact text comparisons. Compatibility normalization such as NFKC can fold Q to Q, which removes the width distinction.
Where did the fullwidth Q come from?
Fullwidth Latin letters were used alongside Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text in mixed-width character systems. JIS C 6226, a Japanese character-set standard for computer information exchange, was established in January 1978; Unicode preserves the wide-to-narrow relationship for conversion between older text and modern text.
In vertical Japanese text, a single fullwidth Latin letter can sit upright in its cell, while a Latin word is generally set as a rotated run. The same full-cell width convention appears in Chinese and Korean text systems.
A width and layout form of Q, not a different meaning or tone.
For ordinary English, use Q; Q can fail exact text matching.

1Questions people ask
1Will software always treat Q and Q as the same?
No. Exact comparisons can distinguish them; compatibility normalization such as NFKC may fold Q to Q. Use that only when width is formatting, because it discards the fullwidth distinction.
