Fullwidth Latin Capital Letter V

54/225

V is the fullwidth V: the same Latin letter as ordinary V, set to fill one East Asian character cell. It grew from a need to align Latin text with East Asian text and legacy data; in code, URLs, and strict IDs, ordinary V is safer. Online, the same width can give text a deliberate retro, spaced look.

What V means

V fills a full East Asian character cell; ordinary V is narrow.

In 1978, Japan's JIS C 6226 character standard helped computers handle Japanese text with a double-byte character set alongside one-cell ASCII, the basic Latin letters and symbols. Unicode kept the fullwidth and ordinary forms separate so older mixed-width text could be converted and back again without losing the width distinction.

When should you use V instead of V?

Use V for full-cell layout or a legacy-data match; otherwise use V.

Microsoft's Japanese IME offers full-width and half-width alphanumeric modes: F9 converts a selection to full-width, and F10 converts it to half-width. The switch changes width, not the letter.

In code, URLs, account IDs, and other strict fields, use ordinary V unless the field requires fullwidth text. Some systems normalize the forms, treating them as equivalent for searches; exact character comparisons can still distinguish them.

Why does V appear in stylized text?

A string of fullwidth letters creates even spacing without actual spaces.

In a Latin-script heading, that regular spacing can make the text look deliberately retro or like stylized web typography.

Neutral in East Asian text; in Latin text, it reads as technical or deliberately stylized.

Use ordinary V in code, URLs, and IDs unless the field expects fullwidth text.

Drift: In the early 2010s, vaporwave and related internet aesthetics reused fullwidth text as spaced, retro typography outside East Asian layouts.

Why does V show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
