Fullwidth Latin Small Letter I

73/225

i is the fullwidth form of ordinary i. It takes the wide character cell used in East Asian text, so the width is a layout choice, not a new letter. Use it for zenkaku alignment or deliberate wide-text styling; ordinary i is the safer choice in English, code, and identifiers. Compatibility normalization can turn i into i.

What i means

It is a wide-layout form of the same letter i. In mixed East Asian text, i can occupy the same character cell as surrounding kana or kanji. Ordinary ASCII i is narrower, so the fullwidth form helps Latin text fit a regular grid.

The distinction grew out of East Asian encodings that combined double-byte characters with single-byte characters. Unicode retained both forms so older text could be converted without losing the width distinction. The ordinary i is its compatibility counterpart, not a different pronunciation.

The standard-making trail spans 1969–1978 and reaches JIS C 6226-1978. That Japanese character set arranged characters in a 9494 matrix, with Latin letters alongside kana, symbols, and kanji; later JIS revisions informed Unicode's compatibility repertoire.

What does i mean when someone sends it?

It reads as i; the width hints at formatting or style. In Japanese input, zenkaku Latin is used when text is meant to share a character grid with kana or kanji. Chinese and Korean systems also have fullwidth and halfwidth distinctions; zenkaku and hankaku are the Japanese terms.

In the early 2010s, vaporwave styling reused fullwidth Latin for deliberately wide text. There, i adds visual texture inside a word or display name without changing how the letter is read. In ordinary English, an isolated i still reads as i; its unusual width suggests a formatting choice.

Ordinary in East Asian grid formatting; conspicuously technical or decorative in everyday English.

Use ordinary i in code, IDs, and forms unless fullwidth is specifically required.

Questions people ask

2

Why did fullwidth i turn into i?

Normalization. Compatibility normalization such as NFKC maps i to ordinary i, so software can remove the width distinction.

Can I use i in a username or code?

Usually avoid it. ASCII-only fields may reject it, and exact comparisons can treat it as different from i; use the ordinary letter unless fullwidth is required.
