Garay small letter Ga

55/69

𐵹 is Garay’s lowercase consonant letter for the g sound, in an alphabet created for Wolof. First published in January 1961 by Assane Faye, Garay is written right to left and was designed with Arabic writing in mind. Sent alone, this character is best read as a letter sample or lesson; display can depend on text direction and font support.

What 𐵹 means

It is Garay’s lowercase letter for the g sound.

Senegalese artist and writer Assane Faye created Garay for Wolof, and it was first published in January 1961. The design fits Wolof sounds and was intended to feel familiar to people who knew Arabic writing while remaining simpler. Faye’s primer pairs this letter with Latin g, which has the same sound value here.

Garay also has a written history: Faye produced textbooks, folktales, maps, and a Wolof Qur’an with translations between the lines. A 2024 Unicode description notes use in women’s groups and adult literacy for Mandinka as well as Wolof, while describing the user community as small. Wolof is also written in Latin script and in Wolofal, an Arabic-based form of Ajami. Garay shares Arabic’s right-to-left direction, but it is a distinct script.

Someone sent me 𐵹 — what is it?

By itself, it is a Garay letter or sample.

A single 𐵹 may be shown as a character sample, used in a lesson, or appear as part of a right-to-left Garay word. Read it in the context of the surrounding text or conversation; the letter alone does not give enough information to infer a personal message.

How do you type and display 𐵹?

Use a Unicode input method, and set the text direction to right to left.

Garay letters do not join to one another like Arabic letters. If software treats the surrounding text as left to right, the text’s directional order may look wrong. As of 27 April 2026, orthography notes describe their Garay font as an early prototype, so a missing or poorly placed glyph can be a font issue.

This letter signals Garay text, a language lesson, or a script sample; it does not by itself convey a casual reaction.

Garay’s Arabic influence does not make it an Arabic letter.

Why does 𐵹 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
