Garay Small Letter Ka

49/69

𐵳 is Garay’s small letter ka, the consonant /k/. Garay is a right-to-left script created by Assane Faye for Wolof in Senegal; this letter belongs in spelling. Separate vowel signs and right-to-left layout can display oddly when text direction or font support is wrong.

What 𐵳 means

𐵳 is Garay’s small letter ka, used for /k/.

Assane Faye created and published Garay for Wolof in Senegal in January 1961. The script drew on familiarity with Arabic writing while giving Wolof its own writing system.

A 2012 proposal describes Faye’s books, folktales, maps, a Qur’an translation with the text aligned to its translation, and teaching and adult-literacy work. It also identifies Latin as the official script for Wolof in Senegal and Wolofal, an Arabic-based way of writing Wolof. In 2024, an account recorded a Garay font and online teaching channels.

Why does Garay display in the wrong order?

Set the text direction to right-to-left.

Garay reads from right to left, but its letters do not join like Arabic letters. Vowel signs are separate characters placed with consonants. If a Garay run is treated as left-to-right, its visual order can mislead even when the character sequence is correct.

In March 2026, Garay orthography notes described the displayed font as an early prototype that may place combining marks incorrectly.

Using 𐵳 signals Garay writing, a tradition associated with Wolof; it is a letter in a spelling system.

Alone, it is likely a letter sample or spelling fragment.

Worth knowing

  • In March 2026, Garay orthography notes described a handwritten word-final swash as ornamental; digital type may omit it.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐵳 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
