What 𑌐 means

It marks the standalone Grantha letter for Sanskrit ai.

Here, ai names one vowel moving from an “a” sound toward “i.” This independent letter writes the vowel by itself; the dependent sign 𑍈 joins a consonant instead.

Why did Grantha develop?

It gave South Indian scribes a fuller way to write Sanskrit.

Grantha developed in the Tamil-speaking south as a fuller way to write Sanskrit, whose sound distinctions were not all easy to represent with the smaller Tamil letter set. Its extra signs let scribes preserve those distinctions in Sanskrit spellings.

Recognizable Grantha ancestors appear in early Pallava inscriptions from the fourth century CE. The later Grantha forms represented by this script tradition belong to a stage after the thirteenth century CE.

Grantha appears in inscriptions and palm-leaf manuscripts, and alongside Tamil in Manipravalam, a mixed Tamil–Sanskrit literary style. As of 2026, that mixed-script practice is rare. Grantha has historical ties to Brahmi and Pallava writing, as well as Tamil, Malayalam, and Tigalari traditions; Pallava forms also influenced scripts in Southeast Asia.

What if someone sends 𑌐 alone?

Treat it as a letter sample or script reference.

A person who reads Grantha can identify the Sanskrit vowel; someone outside that reading community may only recognize an unfamiliar script character. Ask for the surrounding word or what script the sender is showing.

A blank box means the font or app cannot display Grantha. It does not give the letter another meaning.

A specialist letter for Grantha and Sanskrit study, manuscripts, and teaching; it may be opaque outside those settings.

Alone in chat, treat it as a letter sample until context says otherwise.
