Grantha Letter Ttha

Typing 𑌠 requires a Grantha-aware keyboard; the physical key depends on the installed layout. This is the Grantha spelling of Sanskrit ṭha. Its sound is a t made with the tongue curled back and released with a puff of breath.

What 𑌠 means

Choose a Grantha-aware input layout.

A Grantha/INSCRIPT layout assigns this letter a dedicated key; a mnemonic Sanskrit layout lists the retroflex consonants separately from plain t. The physical key varies with the installed layout.

For a whole Sanskrit word, the editor must support Grantha vowel signs and consonant-cluster shaping.

What sound does 𑌠 represent?

It is an aspirated retroflex t.

Aspirated means the consonant releases a puff of breath; retroflex means the tongue tip curls back. In everyday terms, pronounce a t with both features.

On its own, the consonant carries an inherent a, so the syllable is ṭha. A vowel sign changes that vowel; virama, the mark that cancels it, suppresses it and leaves the consonant for a cluster or word ending.

Why was Grantha used alongside Tamil?

It helped mark Sanskrit sound distinctions Tamil writing did not routinely show.

Grantha arose in the Tamil south for writing Sanskrit. Forms in its development appear in early Pallava inscriptions from the fourth century CE; the modern form represented here developed after the thirteenth century CE.

Grantha later appeared beside Tamil in Manipravalam, a literary blend of Sanskrit and Tamil. Both scripts occur in manuscripts of commentaries, blessings, and colophons. Early print and nationalist policies obscured some of this overlap. Malayalam's modern script also developed from Grantha. In 2010, debate over Tamil Unicode presented Grantha as a practical way to publish Sanskrit; critics saw its inclusion as Sanskrit influence on Tamil script standards. This was a language-policy dispute, not a meaning of 𑌠.

Grantha signals Sanskrit, Vedic, or manuscript material; in ordinary messages, 𑌠 reads as specialist text.

On its own, it carries a short a; virama cancels that vowel.
