greek subscript small letter phi

Greek Subscript Phi

106/128

ᵩ is Greek phi in subscript form, used as a phonetic modifier rather than ordinary prose. In UPA transcription, the low position marks co-articulation: a nearby sound shapes how another sound is made. Its exact reading depends on the surrounding transcription.

What ᵩ means

ᵩ marks Greek phi in the UPA's subscript notation. ᵩ is a subscript form of Greek phi used in phonetic transcription. In the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA), a specialist system for recording speech sounds, sound patterns, and word histories, subscript placement marks co-articulation: a sound shaped by the one before or after it. Read ᵩ within its surrounding transcription; on its own, it does not tell you which neighboring sound conditions it.

An encoding proposal from 2002 describes UPA as already in use for more than 100 years and cites publications from 1901; these date the notation, not this character's first appearance. Unicode's 2024 description says early use was chiefly in Finland, Hungary, Estonia, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Russia, and records use worldwide, including North America and Japan.

Is ᵩ the same character as φ?

No. ᵩ is a distinct subscript form of Greek φ. Unicode relates ᵩ to ordinary Greek small phi, but it has its own encoded identity. In UPA, the subscript position carries phonetic information; ordinary φ does not carry that marker.

Why does ᵩ look different on screen?

Fonts can omit or draw this character differently. The glyph depends on font support and design. A visually lowered φ made with text styling is still φ; plain text may discard the styling and cannot treat it as ᵩ.

Specialist phonetic notation; the low position carries data rather than decoration.

Replacing ᵩ with φ drops the subscript distinction.

Why does ᵩ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Phonetic Extensions block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
