What 𝈛 means
It is the first altered step in the vocal series.
The chart’s a′ labels a pitch level; “first sharp” is the first raised form, not modern applied to A.
Developed in Classical Greece, the notation was already established by the middle of the third century BCE in the earliest surviving written music; its earlier evolution is not directly visible. Vocal signs drew on Greek letter forms beside a distinct instrumental series. Examples run from the tragedy Orestes to Christian hymns; the system remained in use through Late Antiquity.

1Why does 𝈛 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
