What 𝈈 means
It marks a pitch; the notation series determines which one. Vocal notation placed pitch signs beside sung words; instrumental notation used a related series. Unicode groups the two series by their shared shape, so the surrounding notation tells you which reading applies.
The earliest surviving documents already show a developed system. Examples survive in a fragment by the playwright Euripides and in later Christian hymns. Modern editions and research use these signs as of 2026.
Specialist and historical; the surrounding notation sets the reading.
Don't read “symbol-9” as a modern note name.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𝈈 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
