Text symbol

What છ means

It is “ch” followed by a puff of breath.

છ contrasts with ચ: both begin with “ch,” but છ adds breath. The consonant carries a built-in vowel; vowel signs change it, while virama (a mark that removes it) closes it. A lone છ is only a letter; read its word.

The Gujarati script grew from Devanagari; its commercial origins preceded literary and religious writing among Hindu, Parsi, and Muslim communities. Literary evidence reaches the 12th century; an Old Gujarati explanatory text is dated to 1487. A 1592 manuscript is separately described as the earliest Gujarati-script document.

Why does છ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
