What does ે do in a Gujarati word?
It changes the consonant’s vowel to Gujarati e.
A Gujarati consonant normally includes a vowel sound without a separate vowel letter. This matra replaces that built-in vowel: ક becomes કે, transliterated as ke. The mark alone is not a complete syllable.
When a syllable begins with the vowel rather than a consonant, use એ. Enter that as a single letter, not as અ plus ે.
