What 𑵤 means
It is Gunjala Gondi’s independent letter for the U vowel.
𑵤 represents U when it starts a syllable or word. After a consonant, Gunjala Gondi uses a dependent vowel sign attached to that consonant instead. The independent letter and attached sign write the same vowel in different positions.
How old is Gunjala Gondi writing?
The oldest reported Gunjala Gondi manuscripts—handwritten books and records—date to around 1750 and were found in Gunjala. A separate book written in the script dates to 1942, showing that its use continued.
The manuscripts cover seasons, numbers, grammar, horoscopes, history, ethics and literature. They preserve community knowledge beyond the alphabet itself; revival work later produced primers, fonts and school materials. The script writes the Adilabad dialect of Gondi, which is more commonly written in Telugu or Devanagari.
Is 𑵤 from Modi?
No: resemblance does not make it a Modi letter.
Gunjala Gondi has its own script tradition. Its forms resemble Modi in appearance and structure, but the scripts are not historically related. The visual similarity does not make 𑵤 a Modi character.
