Half-width Katakana Letter Ha

Text symbol

What ハ means

It is the half-width form of the Japanese Katakana syllable ha.

Its full-width counterpart is ハ. They have the same reading, but text fields and older data may distinguish their width; Unicode normalization can fold them together.

Why was half-width kana created?

It fit Japanese Katakana into one-byte text systems.

In 1969, JIS C 6220 adapted ISO 646 for Japan and added a Katakana set to a one-byte code; the standard was later renamed JIS X 0201. Compact character sets suited early printers and roll-paper terminals.

The narrow form now also remains a format requirement: a 2024 Waseda University payment FAQ specifies half-width Katakana for some account-name entry and gives restrictions for marks and punctuation. Follow the field’s allowed-character rules.

How do I type ハ?

Choose half-width Katakana in a Japanese input method.

As of 2026, Microsoft Japanese IME documents F8 for converting a Katakana input string to half-width. Ctrl NonConvert cycles Japanese kana modes on supported layouts; other input methods may use different keys.

Technical and form-driven: it can signal a width or encoding requirement.

Check the field’s required width; forms can reject the other form.

Questions people ask

3

Is ハ the same as ハ?

For pronunciation, yes; for text width and character identity, no. Unicode normalization can fold the distinction. Keep the form the receiving field or legacy data requires.

Why is パ two characters?

Because the half-width semi-voiced mark ゚ follows ハ as a separate character. The sequence may align or space differently from full-width パ.

Can I enter ハ in a bank account field?

Sometimes, if the field asks for half-width Katakana. A 2024 Waseda University payment FAQ describes that requirement for some account-name entry and lists restrictions for marks and punctuation; follow the form’s allowed-character list.
