halfwidth katakana letter hi

Halfwidth Katakana Hi

139/225

ヒ is the halfwidth Katakana form of hi, with the same reading as ヒ. It comes from Japanese text systems that used a one-byte katakana set and remains useful in data that expects that format. Add ゙ or ゚ after it to write bi or pi; each mark is a separate character.

What ヒ means

Enter ひ, convert it to katakana, then choose halfwidth.

In Microsoft's 2024 Japanese IME guide, F7 converts the current input to fullwidth katakana and F8 to halfwidth katakana. The NonConvert key can cycle through hiragana and both katakana widths.

Why is ヒ different from ヒ?

It has the same reading, in a legacy width form. “Halfwidth” names a text-width convention; the font and layout determine the glyph's actual width. ヒ is the usual fullwidth counterpart.

This form belongs to the Japanese JIS C 6220 character standard, first issued in 1969 and later renamed JIS X 0201. A one-byte katakana set suited older computing and telecommunications systems with limited space. Later encodings linked it with two-byte JIS X 0208, and Unicode preserves both forms for compatibility with mixed-width text.

The marks ゙ and ゚ follow the base as separate characters, forming ビ and ピ. As of 2026, Japanese service rules vary: PayPay Bank rejects halfwidth kana in its name-entry guidance; SBI Shinsei Bank accepts either width but displays fullwidth at confirmation; Japan Pension's e-Gov application rejects halfwidth kana, while its CSV route accepts JIS X 0201. Use the width the field requests.

A field requesting fullwidth kana may reject ヒ even though it reads like ヒ.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ヒ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
