What フ means
It is the halfwidth katakana form of フ, read “fu.”
The Unicode label uses “Hu,” but Japanese words read this kana with the same fu sound as fullwidth フ.
Its recognizable computing ancestor is the kana set of JIS C 6220-1969, later called JIS X 0201. It was designed for exchanging information when code space and compatibility with older systems mattered. Later Japanese encodings and Unicode retained separate narrow and fullwidth forms, so this legacy width still appears in older data and width-sensitive fields.
Why does フ look different from フ?
They have the same reading but different widths and identities.
Compatibility normalization can convert フ to フ. That can help match text, but it removes the width distinction, which may matter for appearance or form validation.
For the voiced kana pu, フ is followed by the separate halfwidth semi-voiced mark ゚, making プ two characters. Its fullwidth counterpart is プ.
How do I type フ?
Type the kana, then convert it to Half-width Katakana.
As of 2024-06-20, Microsoft's Japanese IME documentation lists F8 to convert the current input to halfwidth katakana; it also offers a Half-width Katakana input mode.
Use the width requested by the destination. A fullwidth field expects フ; a halfwidth-only field expects フ.
Technical or form-constrained; fullwidth フ is the neutral choice for ordinary Japanese text.
If a form specifies a width, match it: the other form may be converted or refused.

2Questions people ask
1Will a Japanese bank form keep フ as halfwidth?
Not always. As of 2026-09-14, SBI Shinsei Bank says its remitter and beneficiary fields accept both widths but display them in fullwidth; follow the individual field's rule.
