halfwidth katakana letter ro

Halfwidth Katakana Ro

ロ is the Japanese katakana syllable ro in a halfwidth compatibility form; it does not have a different reading from ロ. It appears in older Japanese data and wherever a system or form asks for halfwidth kana. For ordinary Japanese writing, use ロ; the font controls how either character is drawn.

What ロ means

It is katakana ro in a halfwidth form. Read it as the Japanese kana syllable “ro”; the narrow shape marks a compatibility format, not a different sound.

The encoding lineage goes back to JIS C 6220-1969, later called JIS X 0201. Its single-byte kana repertoire fit early Japanese computing and telecommunications, where a compact set suited limited code space and hardware. During the 1970s, two-byte standards expanded the range of Japanese text; halfwidth kana remained useful for older data.

Why does ロ look narrow?

Its narrow form reflects an older text format. In mixed-width Japanese systems, halfwidth characters could occupy one display cell while fullwidth characters occupied two, allowing kana to share fixed grids with Latin text. The font and layout still determine the actual drawing and spacing.

The fullwidth ロ is its direct compatibility counterpart. Their connection comes from Japanese encoding standards, not just their similar shape. In older data, the width can reveal which text format was used.

Use ロ when the format asks for it

Use ロ when a legacy field, file format, or Japanese input mode specifically requires halfwidth katakana. For ordinary Japanese prose, use ロ. As of 2026-09-14, e-Gov lists JIS X 0201 characters among accepted input, while a Cabinet public-comment form warns that halfwidth katakana can become unreadable after conversion. Follow the receiving field’s rule.

In a message, this narrow form usually signals a format choice, not a special tone. If someone sends it alone, read it as ro first; the character itself does not establish an extra meaning.

Technical or legacy-facing; its narrow form usually signals a format choice.

Use ロ in ordinary Japanese text unless the field requires halfwidth.

Questions people ask

2

Does ロ always take one narrow cell?

No. In fixed-pitch East Asian fonts, halfwidth characters may use half an em, but the font and application control the actual glyph and layout.

Why did a form reject ロ?

It can. Some Japanese systems accept JIS X 0201 input, while others warn that halfwidth katakana may become unreadable after conversion. Use the width the field specifies.
