hangul filler

Hangul Filler

52/94

Hangul Filler is a text character that usually appears blank, not a regular space. As of 2026, people also use it for a blank name, bio, or message when a field rejects empty text. That is a later trick; its original role was as a placeholder in older Korean encoding.

Text symbol

What ㅤ means

It is an encoding placeholder, not a Korean word. KS X 1001 used it in multi-byte sequences that assembled Hangul syllables from individual letters, marking a missing syllable element.

The 1974 KS C 5601 standard described a multi-byte system for encoding Hangul. Modern Unicode normally uses complete syllable characters or jamo—individual Hangul letters that join into syllables.

How can I use it when a field must not be empty?

An ordinary space is often trimmed; this character may survive. It occupies a text slot even if no glyph appears, so the field's own rules determine whether it passes a minimum-text check.

You can enter it through Linux Unicode input, an HTML entity, or supported Windows Unicode input. If a font lacks a visible glyph, it may show a missing-character box even when the character is stored correctly.

What does it mean when someone sends it alone?

It usually reads as deliberate blankness. It may be a joke, a test, or a formatting trick, rather than a hidden Korean word. If the intent matters, ask the sender.

A blank label can signal deliberate absence or Unicode know-how. Avoid using one for an account people need to identify or report.

The effect is deliberately empty-looking, with a small hint of Unicode know-how.

Skip it for names people need to identify or report.

One filler: an empty-looking label or message.
Repeated fillers can meet a field's minimum character count while staying visually blank.

Questions people ask

2

Does it work in every username field?

No. Field rules differ. As of 2026, Discord's global usernames have stricter rules than display names and server nicknames; other platforms may reject or strip the filler.

Why does the blank character turn into a box?

It can be a font issue. A font without a visible glyph may draw a missing-character box even when the character is stored correctly.
